Frequently Asked Questions

Weblicious Environment

  • What does SSD mean?

SSD stands for “solid state drive”. Unlike older-style hard disks (HDDs) which store data on a rotating platter much like a CD, SSDs have no moving parts and store all data in flash memory on a single or series of computer chips.

SSDs are far quicker to access data, have more storage in a smaller package (compared to HDDs), run cooler and so don’t require as much energy, are generally less faulty than HDDs, more efficient and more durable.

For you, this adds up to a faster, more trouble-free web environment.

cPanel

  • What is cPanel?

cPanel is a user-friendly control panel that simplifies the management of your website. It allows you to manage your website files, manage domains, email accounts, SSL certificates and more. cPanel allows users to create websites using a variety of content management systems (CMS) including WordPress, Drupal, Magento and Joomla, monitor disk space usage, check server logs, and edit website files through cPanel.

  • What’s the difference between “web hosting” and “cPanel”?

Web hosting is the infrastructure or environment — the hardware and connections — that makes your website available on the internet.

cPanel is software that makes it easy to manage your hosting services.

Technically, you could manage your web hosting without cPanel, but you’d need some seriouis technical chops.

  • How long does it take to have my hosting set up?

cPanel hosting accounts are typically activated the same day, usually within minutes of ordering your web hosting service. It may ocassionally take longer if you have asked for a specifiic set up.

  • How do I Iog into my cPanel control panel?

You login to your cPanel control panel following the instructions in the Welcome Email that would have been sent to you when you created your account.

Typically, your cPanel login URL uses the following structure: www.yourdomainname.com:2083 where “yourdomainname.com” is replaced by your domain.

  • What’s the difference between my cPanel login and my WordPress login?

cpanel and WordPress are two different things and typically have two different logins.

cPanel is the control panel for your whole web hosting environment: your website (which may or may not be WordPress), your email account(s), various app installers, subdomains and security, and much else.

WordPress, on the other hand, is your actual website (assuming you’ve built your website on WordPress. This may not be the case if you’ve elected to build your website on a different platform.) It’s the pages, posts and design of your site that is viewable to the general public.

  • How do I create a website?

If you’ve chosen a cPanel hosting account, you have a number of options:

    • Sitejet Builder is a free website builder integrated into cPanel. It features an extensive array of ready-made, drag-and-drop templates that will help you design and launch a professional-looking website quickly. You’ll find Sitejet Builder in your left-hand tools column when you log into cPanel. You can find more information here: Sitejet Builder .
    • Install WordPress or another content management system (CMS). cPanel has a number of tools to help you install software quickly and easily. WordPress Toolklit can be accessed from the left-hand Tools column when you log into cPanel. Another option is to use the Installatron app (from the Applications tools in cPanel) to install WordPress (> Apps for Content Management) or one of a number of other CMSs (e.g. Drupal, Joomla, Concrete — it’s up to you). You can also use Softaculous to perform a similar function — login to cPanel, and scroll down to Software > Softaculous Apps Installer. Both Installatron and Softaculous will guide your through the installation.

Please note that you cannot install an instance of, say, WordPress and Sitejet on the same domain.

Domains

  • Can I register any domain?

There are certain domain extensions (called unrestricted gTLDs) that anyone can register. These include the extensions .com, .net, .info and .org. Many of the “new” domain extensions such as .store, .social, .online and so on similarly don’t have any specific registration requirements.

The group of domain extensions known as country specific domains generally do require you to meet some form of registration criteria. These criteria can differ from country to country. In Australia, for example, the registration of a domain using the .com.au extension requires, firstly, proof that the registration is for some kind of business entity (proof is usually an ABN or ACN number) and that the domain name you are seeking to register has a significant connection with your business.

Please see our knowledgebase article for more information on the specific requirement of .AU domains.

  • How long does it take to register a domain?

Most common domain registrations are almost immediate and you will receive confirmation of your registration to your nominated email address within minutes.

Certain domain extenstions — notably .id.au and .asn.au — require manual review and registration and confirmation may take several hours. Please be patient as we review your registration information.

Other country-specific domains may also require manual review. You will be notified if this is the case at the time of registration.

  • Should I register more than one domain name?

Some businesses elect to register their domain name across several domain extensions to protect their brand.

For example, an Australian business called ExamplesRUs might seek to register examplesrus.com.au as well as examplesrus.com (and, perhaps, assuming they’re an online store, examplesrus.store) to protect their brand against domain poaching or squatting by a competitor.

No, that doesn’t mean you need to create three websites; in such instances, it is common to redirect any additional domains to the one where your website lives. This is a seamless experience for the user and does not affect your Google ranking at all.

  • What’s the best domain name for me?

The best domain name should mirror your business name or brand.

It may be that your ideal domain name has already been registered; in this instance, you will need to think more laterally and find a word or phrase that lengthens or abbreviates your brand name, or hints at your business promise in a memorable manner.

Email

  • cPanel Email

We offer unlimited email accounts with all of our cPanel and Managed WordPress accounts.

This means you can create and assign different email accounts to different departments or staff. For example, you could configure the following email accounts: support@yourdomain.com, orders@yourdomain.com, accounts@yourdomain.com, marketing@yourdomain.com … and so on. Alternatively you could set up sally@yourdomain.com, greg@yourdomain.com, vanessa@yourdomain.com … you get the idea.

One catch: the cumulative data in your email boxes counts towards your overall storage space. If you’re in an industry that regularly receives emails with large attachments, you may need more storage space. Hey, we can help with that!

Site Builder

  • Do I need to install Sitejet Builder?

Sitejet Builder for cPanel is automatically installed in your cPanel control panel when your hosting is set up. Simply click on Sitejet Builder in the sidebar navigation or in the cPanel dashboard to start creating your new website with Sitejet.

  • Is Sitejet Builder FREE?

Absolutely. Sitejet Builder is included in your cPanel hosting at no additional cost. It includes everything you need to build beautiful websites swiftly, from templates to AI text generator to full access to code, if you want it.

WP Toolkit

  • How much does WP Toolkit cost?

WP Toolkit is absolutely free and pre-installed with all of our hosting packages. Look for it in the Tools sidebar menu once you’ve logged into cPanel.

  • Does WP Toolkit work with Softaculous and Installatron?

Softaculous and Installatron are app installers that make the installation of software such as WordPress easy. And, Yes, they replicate some of the functionality of WP Toolkit.

However, if you were to choose one of these specifically for WordPress, we would recommend WP Toolkit. It has some key functions, such as Smart Updates, that, for us, make it stand out.

Weblicious WordPress Hosting

  • WordPress installation and set up

We install WordPress for you, according to industry best practice and with a couple of expert tweaks to make it work hardest for you. This typically includes installation of our curated suite of plugins, installation of a page builder (Divi or Beaver Builder, your choice), installation of a theme and child theme to suit the page builder you have chosen, installation and configuration of a caching service (Litespeed cache), and configuration of image and site optimisation settings that gets your site off to the best start.

Image and site optimisation are done during initial setup, and should keep performing automatically. However, it up to you to keep them functioning at their best by periodically checking checking they’re running as they should. We provide easy instructions elsewhere on our knowledgebase.

If you have chosen a hosting package that includes Woocommerce, we will need to get in touch to clarify specific details of your merchant gateway and other business details.

  • What is Litespeed cache?

Our servers run an operating system called Litespeed. This is similar to other web server applications like NGINX and Apache, but, out of the box, a lot faster.

Because of its unique configuration, we use a specific caching plugin that best suits Litespeed.

Caching is a process that helps dynamic environments like WordPress create, compress and serve static pages to visitors, as this is a lot faster and puts a lot less strain on the server. That’s a simple explanation.

With Litespeed cache installed there is no need to run other site- or server-side caching plugins, including Memcached or Redis, or optimisation plugins like image compressors or code minification. In fact, running other caching services may prove counter productive.

  • What is staging and cloning?

Staging and cloning refers to making a replica of your site such that you can make changes without impacting your live site, and, when you’re ready, publishing those changes.

This means that if you make a mistake your live site isn’t affected.

Having the ability to stage or clone a site is often a costly extra with some web hosts. We think making changes to your site should be stree-free; that’s why we offer this functionality for free.

  • What does automatic core, theme and plugin updates refer to?

WordPress is updated several times a year by a team of developers. When it is is update, it is good practice to ensure your website has updated to the latest version of WordPress. We refer to this as the core update. It’s not strictly necessary to update every time there is a core update, but failing to do means you’re not taking advantage of the latest bug fixes and security updates, as well as functionality updates. Miss enough updates, and it’s possible your site will stop functioning. (We’ve been involved with a site that was so far behind the update ball that the site had stopped functioning and, worse, couldn’t be updated. We virtually had to rebuild the site from scratch.)

Whenever the WordPress core is updated, many theme and plugin developers must also update their themes and plugins. Again, this is simply good practice.

When we install WordPress for you, we configure such that it updates itself and any themes plugins automatically when and update is available.

  • What is a Page Builder?

Not so long ago, you needed to be able to write code to get a decent looking website out of WordPress.

Page builders have changed that. Fundamentally, they’re a drag-and-drop library of “widgets” that you place on a page and edit according to your needs. They let you design and assemble a website based on your needs, and do so easily and quickly.

There are a few competing versions out there; two of the best are Divi and Beaver Builder. We also include a library of premade templates — entire sites, pages and sections that you can drag-and-drop into place to make building your website even faster.

Typically these cost several hundred dollars a year. However, we have a license with Divi and Beaver Builder that permits us to supply these to our clients so long as we remain those clients’ web agency. Should you stop using Weblicious as your web agency, we would, under the terms of our license, have to revoke permission to use these page builders. Please note that in such a circumstance your site would still be usable, but to further build or edit your site using either of these page builders, you would need to source your own license.

  • What is a theme and child theme?

A theme is your basic building block of WordPress. It’s a coded set of instructions that basically tells WordPress, “What now?” and “What next?”

Beaver Builder and Divi work best with their own specific themes. These are basically blank sets of code — the bare minimum to run your site efficiently — onto which you builder your site using the respective page builder.

A child theme is a blank copy of a theme that becomes the holding file for all your individual tweaks. Utilising a child theme is best practice as it means your individual tweaks don’t get over-written every time you update the parent theme.
